The Task Pinsel
Cafe is a new coffee shop in the heart of Lviv, dedicated to the works of a famous Galician sculptor Johann Georg Pinsel. One might wonder what makes this place special? Lviv, Rynok Square and coffee is quite a common combination for locals and tourists alike. Yes, Pinsel Cafe is indeed a coffee shop, but here ‘it’s not just about the coffee’. During our briefing with Ilya Verkholyak – the owner and founder of the café – he said: “My goal and mission is to introduce the world to our ‘local Michelangelo’, to showcase his art and be proud of it. To educate everyone and bring them closer to something divine. ” Following an original concept Pinsel Café leads by example, showing that big ideas can be implemented in a small space. Our task was to reflect this vision in the logo, to emphasize the uniqueness of the institution and its theme.
The Solution
Browsing ideas while contemplating the works of Pinsel, we noticed that often volume of the
sculptures is created by the play of light and shadows. They emphasize the main features of
Pinsel's works: polygonality, three-dimensional looks, multidimensional drapery and dramatic
images. We tried to reflect all these in the logo.
The name typeface appears somewhat ‘torn’,
imitating the style of Pinsel's sculptures. The inscription seems to protrude through the multiple
layers, as if casting a recognizable shadow, creating a coherent, simple composition. The color of
the logo resembles gilding, which the sculptor often used in his works.
Results
As a result, the logo and identity combine harmoniously with the interior of Pinsel Cafe. The
café’s concept together with Pinsel's work and a modern minimalist design seamlessly mold into
a coherent story about coffee, art and people. Now this story lives in Lviv, at 40 Rynok Square.
